A Breastfeeding Initiative – Vernon Public Health Unit

“Breastfeeding is always welcome here. A breastfeeding initiative.

Vernon Public Health Nursing in collaboration with Paulina O. Niechciał of Otylia Photography.”

I feel honoured to have my photos up at the Vernon Public Health Unit. Thanks to Jackie, one of the public health nurses for making this happen! What began as an invitation to join forces for the Breastfeeding Art Expo turned into this wonderful project! Real photos of breastfeeding and bottle-feeding moms around the clinic.

Hope you enjoy this little injection of beauty next time you take your kiddos in for a well baby visit, breastfeeding support or immunizations!

As always, thank you to the families in the photos

Vernon Midwifery

It has been a great pleasure to get to know Carrie Sizer, Registered Midwife of Vernon Midwifery. Carrie is new to Vernon, recently moved from the UK last summer and is working with Sylvia Nicholson at North Okanagan Midwifery. She recently opened a beautiful office in the Alpine Centre off Kalamalka Lake Road and is accepting new patients!

Carrie and Sylvia provide care for pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period for women anticipating normal, low risk pregnancies and births. They attend women at their labour and birth at home as well as in hospital.

Their services are covered entirely by the BC medical services plan (MSP) but they say not to worry if you don’t have MSP, midwifery care is available to private clients too.

Carrie and Sylvia strive to provide care that is evidence based, non-authoritarian, supports informed choice and that recognizes the woman as the primary decision-maker. Read more about midwifery care here.

Take a tour of Carrie’s office below and enjoy the art on the walls provided by Otylia Photography.

Kim | Pasadena, CA | May 2016

“My husband and I feel very lucky to have found Paulina to document the final days of our twin pregnancy and the beginning of our adventure with our new babies. Paulina has a remarkable eye for capturing the joy and beauty of maternity, resulting in gorgeous photos that captured the hope and promise we felt in the days leading up to our twin’s birth. In their newborn photos, she was able to showcase our baby’s first interactions as brother and sister and their unique personalities at a very young age. Breastfeeding has been a beautiful part of our journey as a growing family, and as a nurse and doula, Paulina made me feel comfortable and at ease as she captured stunning photos of me nursing our newborn twins. Paulina has a true talent for capturing life’s special moments and we will always treasure the precious images that she took for our family.”

Devyn | Herbal Bath & Breastfeeding Session

20150215-oty_3300

I met this lovely lady just days before I photographed the birth of their first child two years ago. Capturing such an intimate and life-changing event creates an immediate bond between the photographer and family. I love the families I have met through this work and was super excited to meet their new addition.

Herbal baths are a wonderful opportunity for mom and baby bonding, healing and relaxation. This beautiful, sweet-smelling blend was created by Homestead Herbals, grown organically on an eco micro-herbal farm in Kitchener, Ontario. Included in their packaging is a little tag that informs their customers on which bee-friendly plants to grow. Read more about why we need to protect our pollinators and how to create a bee-friendly garden here.

Fifteen day new Devyn settled right in and was perfectly content floating in her mama’s arms.
